Closing the G.A.P. is a workforce development program dedicated to providing students aged 16-24 with access to work development training, interview experience, and industry credentials. Build 2 Lead works to supply students with positive outcomes such as job retainment, enrollment into post-secondary education, and/or advanced career training!
This summer our Closing the GAP Students learned about:
Water Module
In the Water module, students learned about the importance of water, differences between saltwater and freshwater, and the issues caused by excessive groundwater extraction. The week's highlight was a water conservation enterprise activity, where students brainstormed business ideas to help conserve water in their communities. Students were fully engaged, showing enthusiasm in developing plans that would positively impact their local environment.
Waste Module
The Waste module was the focus of this week. Students learned about the waste cycle, the benefits and challenges of landfills, and policies to reduce waste. A key milestone was the "Toxins Investigation Activity," where students explored how chemicals in common waste products can harm people and the environment. Students actively took notes for each module and participated in quizzes, showcasing their interest in understanding waste management and its effects on the community.
Resume and Career Building
This week focused on resume writing and career development. The students had full participation, engaging with guest speakers who introduced them to various internships and job opportunities. The highlight of the week was the networking opportunities provided to the students, helping them connect with professionals who could help them secure job placements. The students’ focus and eagerness to learn were apparent throughout the week.
Final Week of Programming (Graduation and Networking)
The final week of the CTG program was centered around wrapping up the program and setting students up for success. Students submitted surveys and participated in a graduation ceremony. Networking was a key focus, with students being reminded that job opportunities help individuals step out of their comfort zones, face new challenges, and develop important skills. The facilitators emphasized staying in touch with students and ensuring they are on the right path. The students were engaged and showed a strong interest in pursuing further education and job opportunities.
After our final week of CTG we held a graduation for our youth and culminated with video interviews for our partner Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD)! Our youth were able to get on both sides of the camera and become the interviewers.Â
